Patrick Dempsey, who’s probably best known for his role as Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd on Grey’s Anatomy, sold his architectural masterpiece in Malibu for an impressive $15 million – $500,000 over the asking price. That’s quite a hefty profit for the actor, who purchased the home in 2009 for $7 million.
The home was listed in April for $14.5 million, according to real estate agent Ladd Jackson who represented the buyer. Multiple home buyer hopefuls bid on the place, helping to drive the sale price higher.
Designed by the renowned architect Frank Gehry, the gated home is known as the ‘Tin House’ because of the corrugated metal that is incorporated within the structure. Originally built for abstract painter and geometrician Ron Davis in the 1970’s, the home sits on a massive 3.23 acre lot overlooking the ocean.
The yard includes number of coveted features, including a wooden deck, pool, spa, outdoor showers, soccer field, fountain courtyards, and an entertaining area featuring an alfresco kitchen with a pizza oven. The property also boasts more atypical features, including an animal coop, barn and pasture, and even a rock climbing wall.
The three bedroom, four bathroom home, which was once featured in Architectural Digest, also boasts a superb interior as well. Dramatically high ceilings, angular walls of glass, skylights and custom wood flooring can be found throughout all 5,547 square feet of the home, within which you’ll find a gourmet kitchen, a great room, media room, and an owner’s suite with its own fireplace.
It seems that Dempsey is a fan of ultra modern architectural homes. Last year he snatched up a three bedroom, three bathroom corrugated-steel pad in Venice, CA for $1.925 million. Dubbed the “One-Window House,” the mid-century property also features a two-bedroom main house and a guest cottage.
Despite making a killing on the sale, Dempsey has certainly experienced his fair share of turbulence over the past year. His infamous character was recently axed by Grey’s Anatomy creator Shonda Rhimes, who killed McDreamy off in a car crash. His demise on the show hasn’t fizzled his love of car racing though – the actor continues to race competitively for his own Dempsey Racing.
